Healthcare in New Zealand
With the exception of GP visits, healthcare is free for New Zealand residents, citizens and people on 2 year work visas. Compared to the UK the system works very well although like most things it’s not perfect and there are pressure points.
When you arrive in New Zealand you should register with your local practice (you can choose which one you join). GP visits usually cost between $45 and $60. Children under 14 and people over 65 are free. If you require surgery or specialist advice you should see your GP who will make a referral to a Specialist or the local hospital.
Many people have private medical insurance cover which can be purchased online or through an insurance broker. The benefit of private cover is that you can often see a Specialist, have diagnostic procedures or have surgery done more quickly than in the public system
